History
Built in 1891 as a twelve-ton 2-4-2T for the Rogue River Valley RR, which ran between Medford and Jacksonville, Oregon.
Sold to a lumber yard for use as a switcher within a year or two of delivery, as #1 proved too light to pull a single combination car up the moderate grade from Medford to Jacksonville (especially when local youngsters soaped or greased the rails). Trucks removed by lumber co. to increase traction. Bought by Mrs. Chad O'Connor in early 1950's as a birthday present for her husband; later acquired by Stan Garner of Short Line Enterprises.
Service
In occasional service for Fillmore & Western Ry., located about 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles, CA, on State Highway 126.
Operated for SCRVRRHS Railroad Days celebration in Fillmore on March 28 & 29, and on weekend of July 3, 4 & 5, 2009.
Notable Events
Hosted GGRM crews while #2472 was in Los Angeles for the Pacific Shore Limited / Earth Train in September, 1992.
Starred in Ventura County Fair parades in 1993 & 1994, riding on a flatbed trailer with steam up and whistle blowing. 1994 'filming a movie' float featured noted John Wayne impersonator Ermal Williamson "chasing the bad guys", who were attempting to escape on an old handcar 'running' ahead of the engine on the float.
Future
Very bright. Owned & cared for by a successful movie & tourist RR which is run by a very long-term railfan with a sizeable volunteer group assisting.
Technical Info
Currently configured as a ten-ton 0-4-0T.
Fuel: Wood
Design & Features
Built as 2-4-2T, trucks removed prior to 1900. New tank in early 2000's, extensive firebox & boiler work in 2008.
Fittings & Appliances
Two small lifting injectors, "armstrong" brake, air pump inoperable since mid or late 1980's.
Modifications
Reconfigured from 2-4-2T to 0-4-0T in early or mid 1890's.
Paint Schemes
Original colors unknown to this author. She had a green (!) tank in the late eighties; repainted to tuscan & maroon circa 1991, cab rebuilt in 1992 or '93 to single panel, and name "Sespe." applied by Stan Garner at that time. (Note that the period is part of the name applied to the cab. Per Stan, this is authentic for the time period in which she was built.)
